  • Dismantling and re-using old CRANE CO. boiler (SEATTLE)

I have been given and have dismantled an old boiler built by the CRANE CO. of Seattle. It is a residential size boiler used to heat an approx. 1000 sq. ft older home. All of the radiators have been pulled out of the house long ago and the boiler itself is all intact with all plumbing, gauges, etc. etc. etc. in very pristine shape. The cast iron body is a four piece assembly that I was able to separate without damage. I had to seperate them to even consider getting this unit out of the basement. (Not sure as to what compound was used to seal the sections together) The boiler has a brass tag on the front of one of the four doors: Cat# 1-8; Series B-1 rated at Steam Pressure 15 and Water Pressure 30. I haven't seen any dates relating to age other than reference penciled on the wall of sometime in 1939. I am curious if this boiler is worth using again or selling for cast iron scrap. I am in the formation of starting a small brewery and want to use steam to boil my beer as well as heat my brewing and cleaning water. I have read through some of your posts in your resources section and it sounds to me as you have some "Steam Guru's" that might be able to help. Thanks, Scott
  • Well,

being that old, and likely converted from it`s firing method a few times over,,you would likely be hard pressed to attain 50% eff.
I would advise scrapping-it and getting something better,,,chalk-it up to experience and move on.
