Went back yesterday and put him on a new tstat and replaced a couple of radiator valves that were toast. Repacked one which had a packing gland.
Also reworked the one return line. The balky rads heat quick as the others now. Thanks

main air vent on two pipe
I have a system I'll be working on later this week or next. HO wants to get it into best operation.
We'll likely be replacing some radiator valves, but I noticed a problem in the basment. The system has two main and returnm lines serving the sides of the house.
One return has the main vent where it drops down to the boiler return. The other comes back and drops into the return below the water line, so there is no air vent.
The vent resembles the one shown on pg 30 of the lost art companion. It appears someone changed this setup, since the two lines were once connected above the water (capped tee on vented line and ell on second line up).
I'm going to put it back like it appeared to be, since the one line doesn't vent right and heats poorly.
Any ideas what the venting capacity on those big monsters? Just in case its bad like some of the other parts.Thanks0 -
How many radiators
are on each main? Do they have traps on the returns?

three on the unvented loop, 7 or 8 on the large loop. The rads themselves have thermostatic traps
no traps on return lines, they drop below the water line before piping into boiler on common line.0 -
A Gorton #1 on the short loop
and a Gorton #2 on the long one should work fine. No need to repipe the return drips if each return has a vent before its drip.
Are the steam mains properly vented?

the mains are sufficiently vented, just wondering if having the mains together originally would have been a problem.
Will only take 5 minutes to reconnect above the waterline.0 -
Great!
Another Vapor system saved.
