Waterglas Boiler Cleanout - Weil McClain

I just got a new seal/insulation for my boiler cleanout.
It's for a Weil McClain 568. The kit came with waterglas.

What do I do with the waterglas?

Use it to...

Stick the blanket material to the cleaned cast iron or steel cleanout plate on the top of the boiler....is what it's purpose is. However I find myself using it less and less as it makes the soft blanket rip on service.

Are you speaking of the "firebox/chamber" kit, or just a kit for the top cleanout ? Chris

It's the kit for the top cleanout.

The existing one is torn/worn and is installed with the plate on the outside, the insulation attached to the plate with the foil part mating to the boiler. This is attached to the boiler with two screws.

I would...

Just scrape the cleanout plate clean and "rest" the blanket side of the refractory to the cleaned steel cap.(No Waterglass!) When it comes time to clean it again, you will get just the plate when pulling it up....but the foil will be easy to grab and remove from the top slots.

One more piece of advice...get some anti-seize compound on the screws going into the block. This will make it even easier to do the job everytime. Chris.

On those top covers I have some 3-M spray adhesive. I clean the underside and hit it with some of the adhesive (it doesn't take much) and stick the blanket to that and let it set up for a minute. It does away with that sticking problem that you refer to. When I do those chambers I also upgrade the front plate putty type material to roping material. I clean and wire brush out the groove, hit it(the groove) with the 3-M and wait a minute for some tack to develop. Once that happens I lay in the roping and let it dry a bit. IMO it forms a better seal than that putty stuff and if you ever need to pull the front plate again the rope stays in the groove. I'd use the pre glued roping but its not always easy to find and somewhat of a PITA to use. I've found this method to be easier and more effective than using the putty strips they issue.
