The HX was ok, but the flue pipe.....

.....what flue pipe?

9 year old copper boiler on a simple baseboard system. HX looked good. So glad this guy called me. He is in a wheel chair and can not inspect his boiler in the basement. He was after me for a couple of weeks to come to his house. Thank goodness for the combustion and relief air vents.

Direct return w/ copper boiler? I find that when the vent suffers like that and no HX damage the hood was getting the draft and not the appliance. A baro damper helped, but Laars usually does not like baro dampers on their equipment I have found.

    Tough Call For Us

    Hi, Tim.

That's a tough call for us, because the draft hoods are certified equipment with the boilers, so we have to leave that up to people who are (hopefully) qualified to choose and install and set up a barometric damper properly.

There are many successful installations with those, though. Installations that are tested properly and are done by contractors (like many here) that know what they are doing. And I, for one, appreciate those contractors more than most people here could imagine.

So a baro damper properly set up with a analyzer would still be under warranty? I had a Mighty Therm a while back that could have benifited from a baro damper, but was told to not install it by yer' guys...all of whom I respect for their willingness to help and their knowledge of their product. Just curious what official 'policy' is on using the hood supplied. I have had chimneys that were 3'X2' and 4 stories high...that's a LOT of draft, and the hood was getting all the draft. The unit could have used more draft as found by checking flue gas O2 levels & CO levels while blocking the hood w/ foil. Did way better with the blocked hood.
