It was good to see you, Paul.
AHR kicked my butt this week.
Parties at Grundfos, Taco, Honeywell, Wilo... two days at the show...I'm exhausted.

Oh Boy!
Went down to NYC for the AHR expo last night. The size of this show is incredible. I walked in, looked around, and realized I should have planned 2 days at least.
This show is mostly commercial/industrial. Even the companies with residential equipment were more focused on the commercial end of things. I think Riello had one F40 burner, the rest were these massive things that must fire 100 gals an hour.
Afterwards I went to the Hard Rock Cafe for Beckett's party. Then on to Wilo's on top of Rockefeller Center. Very nice party. I've attached a few pics of your favorite wallies.0 -
Great seeing you John
I was only there one day and it will take me 2 to recover. Metro North screwed up the track listing on the board. Because of that I missed the 10:22. Had to wait an hour for the next one. Got home at 1:45 AM. I believe I'm sitting at my desk now. Either that or I'm dreaming. Oy!

One thing that really frustrated me at the show was companies that had new products, but didn't bring them to the show. Case in point: Buderus' new G125BE blue flame burner/boiler. The rep told me it is available and it is in the US. You have to be factory training to install and service this unit. I can't understand why they wouldn't have one on display.
I was also surprised by how many manufacturers had no information out on their tables. Maybe they wanted to force you to ask for them so that they could do their pitch.
Another interesting fact. The manufacturers aren't allowed to unload their own equipment. One person told me that a particular piece of equipment took two hours to uncrate and put in the display area and it will take another 2 hours to box it all back up, at a cost of $600 per hour. I can't imagine what it cost Marley to bring in the cooling tower they had there. It must have been at least 15 x 15 x 15!0 -
I was
going to go, but life got in the way..Looks like it was fun!0 -
I heard,,,
You couldn't even plug your own plug in.
Anyhow, yea, I only went Thursday, no parties for me unfortunately. I'd say the most impressive thing I saw was the 700HP / 17,500 GPM pump Taco had tucked off in the corner. I'm going to guess the armature, shaft and impeller have to weigh at least 500 lbs yet you can turn it with one hand. I thought that was cool...
All in all I had quite a few good conversations with quite a few knowledgeable people and got a look at some pretty interesting stuff here and there. I liked the automatic condenser tube brushes. Anyone whos ever punched a few condenser tubes can appreciate that idea. They told me it has been around for 30 years. I'd never seen it before.
Great time, hung around with the Robur guys from Evansville and got to meet the two engineers from the factory in Italy. It was nice to put a face to a couple guys I had been communicating with for over a year. That's a great team right there, I'm proud to be associated with them.0 -
We went down as a group with one of our suppliers. I straightened out a WM Ultra issue.-- They knew about a problem, but don't tell you unless you ask. We also spoke to several other boiler manufacturers - learning more about their products in from them face to face then you can from literature.
I saw a lot of stuff downstairs that scared me. Our policy is never to selll anything we can't stand behind, and some of those manufacturers ... well enough said.
The best part of the excursion however was... the bus ride. Sat and talked with guys I've known over 20 years- shared storied of problems & solutions ( just like is done here) and did the same at dinner- definitely a worthwhile day
Thanks Dory

Me and the Taco guy,,,
Talked about putting that 700HP motor in a car. Putting it in a car isn't a problem, it's the part about feeding it 800 amps that's a little tricky.0 -
Just need a long extension cord.0 -
Yea!!
That's what I was thinking! And a big spring loaded reel to take it all back up. You could only go straight though. BUT, if it breaks down you just give the cord a yank and it'll reel you back in!0 -
korean condensing unit
Are you referring to the korean wall mount condensing combi boiler? That did look a little scary, but also kind of impressive. You may not want to start installing these things but I imagine this sort of equipment is being widely adopted in asian markets, which is good from an environmental perspective. Market forces will drive the evolution of any technology, as energy costs rise so does the need for low cost high efficiency. You might not want one of these units in your house, or to have to service it on a friday night, but this scary looking stuff may have a more important impact than you think.
If you ask me a yellow tipped flame under a inefficient cast iron heat exchanger or tank hot water heater is something to be scared of, We can't go on using energy this way, as reliable as it may be. Still I wouldn't want to be responsible when a transistor burns out on one of these things either.
The new Noritz condensing instantaneous was impressive , 11 gpm flow rates and a crazy wide modulation range, something like 12 to 160k. and PVC venting. I know there's some general reservations about instantaneous units, but I do think this sort of performance gives the indirect a run for it's money. Standby tank losses do add up and should be factored, especially in an AC climate, where you pay twice for lost heat.
By the way That Taco pump was cast in Brazil, Not RI. Globalization is real
