cant get steam trap apart

I've ordered some new thermostatic elements for my dunham bush steam traps (1e). I thought I'd take one of the steam traps apart to get the hang of it. I broke the trap. Even after I then removed it and put it in a vice, I couldn't get the cap to come off. Any ideas?
