whatever you burn will soot up. condensation builds up and 'stuff' sticks to it!

if you shutdown your stove too much you'll get creosote.

on the flip side, I've burned green pine with no problems, very hot wide open fires.

added: I check my stove pipe about every 2 weeks.

Would burning pallet skids and 2 x 4 wood scraps in a wood burning fireplace with stainless steel chimney soot it up?

just used something new called 'enviro-log'

made of paper and wax, etc. seems to burn very clean and constant, no popping embers out, logs burn for two hours each. says it has 86% less creosote. got it at home depot.
  • i have a ss chimney,

double wall, insulated, on my fireplace furnace and have burned almost everything in it, but mostly oak/hardwoods.
and by burning 1 load of wood at full tilt daily, i haven't cleaned or needed to clean it ever, and that's 12yrs now. the only thing i've needed to clean twice a year has been the critter screen, 1/2" ss hardware cloth

    Creosote Problem

Try a product called ANTI-CREO-SOTE its a liquid just get the fire hot and spray it on (comes in a pump bottle) if you have the black glazed stuff in your pipe it turns it to a crumbly stuff that will brush right out. Been using it about 10 years. Cut my cleaning to once a season on the chim. and twice on the conecting pipe.

    Only hard woods

Everything soots a fireplace, and chimney. But if you only burn hardwoods it will lessen the chances of the bad soot the type that causes chimney fires. Stick with oak, hickory, cherry, ect. Pines are real bad (2x4's) alittle is okay for starter kindling.

Yearly cleanings are a must if you burn a lot. Chimney fires are no joke if you have ever seen one. I have four masonary fireplaces they will take alot more heat then the prefab,s of today.
