    Skimming a Steam Boiler

Questions about different skimming procedures------Dan's "A Steam Heating Primer" describes a "Cold skimming" procedure......But almost all boiler manufacturers maintainance instructions mention performing the skimming process with the boiler water temp. kept hot, just below the steaming point.

Does one of these methods work any better than the other ??
Also,in the winter months, with incoming water temps being very low---what special precautions should be taken for skimming ??

    better done warm....

than cold but better cold than not at all. allows for oils to be flowing better. Also stuff will float to the top if the water is hot. If you are skimming the boiler has only a trickle of water entering the boiler. The boiler should be fine. The boiler should be switched on and off periodically. kpc

    strap a strap on aquastat

to the riser..wire it to the gas valve temporarily..start your skim and go about your business..come back at days end to remove the aquastat..house won't have heat during this process but you'll have a hot skim..starts to steam and shuts off the burner by itself.
