Carlin G3B question

Thanks so much for the response, Darrell. We've had a lot of service techs in to look at the furnace but nobody has seemed to know what they are doing much.

We're in New Haven, CT. Our plan now is to call Carlin up in E. Longmeadow, MA, and see if they know of a good service tech down in our area who can help us out by ordering & installing a new control.

My partner the auto mechanic is also thinking about signing up for one of the classes Carlin gives (we're only an hour away from them).

We now have hope for the first time that we might be able to solve this problem --- and gain a new hobby to boot!

Will keep you posted.

Best,
Sue W.

    Carlin G3B help

    We have a Carlin Model G3B power gas conversion burner. Our intermittent problem, which goes back at least five years, is this: when the furnace has heated the house up to the temperature on the thermostat, it shuts off (as expected), and when the thermostat calls for heat again, the fan goes on and in thirty seconds or so it makes a noise as if it’s trying to start, but in five seconds, that noise stops with a click (but the fan keeps running). We have to shut the main switch to the furnace off for a half an hour before we can try again, for it to start. So the thing will never go on automatically, without human intervention.

    Things we’ve tried:
    1. the igniter was changed (twice) and the screen cleaned;
    2. the thermostat was changed (twice);
    3. the gas valve was removed and the pipes were cleaned of dust, and the gas valve put back in;
    4. we flush the low water cut off weekly.

    Any suggestions? We are do-it-yourself homeowners, and my partner is an auto mechanic, but maybe we’re at the point where we need professional help?

    Thanks!
    Sue W.

    Sounds like no ignition. Better have a professional check it.

    The G3-B must have good ground from the burner screen back through the chassis to the control board. Sounds like you handled that by cleaning the burner screen. The OEM control on the G3-B gets "stupid" for no apparent good reason and nuisance lockouts occur that reset when the power in disconnected and reconnected. The burner may run for several cycles, or several months without problem. The only cure is to replace the ignition control, and unless you get the OEM control there will be some wiring magic that needs to be done in order to install a universal control board...time for a good service tech. The good news is that is shouldn't take him/her long and the new control isn't all that expensive. The problem will go away. I am doing one myself on Monday...actually, I'm gonna watch while my daughter does it...she's sixteen.
    Don't let anybody talk you into throwing away the G3-B...it's a great little burner, and any other is going to have the same sort of issues.

    Carlin G3B question success!

    Darrell,

    Thanks for the suggestion of replacing the control. We finally got our gas company to do that and it's working like a charm! We really appreciate your taking the time to lend us your expertise.
