Chimneys, When to install a liner.

the service call? Was it a oil burner guy or a a mason/ chimney sweep? Sounds like a oil guy...generally he would not clean chimneys..but if it was interfering w/ the proper function of a unit then yes....I would get a certified chimney sweeo out the answer you question. They can do a complete inspaection and give you the best course of action....kpc

Chimneys. When to install a liner.

What conditions require a chimney to be relined?

    What criteria are used?

I have an existing oil forced air furnace with an 8'x12"
clay liner. A service call generated an inspection of the chimney and revealed the 8" dia. x 10" long metal thimble through the stone foundation had corroded. No futher inspection of general chimney condition, no measurements of flue size just a liner quote for me.

My inspection of chimney shows the clay liner to be in good shape everywhere except where cemented directly to the
top of the chimney. Moisture and expansion cracks in this area only.

When I removed the smoke pipe to look into the base of the chimney I see the 8" dia. hole in the clay liner is almost half full of debris (Dead birds etc). How annoying, should a cleaning and full service have included removal of all debris.

What are the advantages of a liner? Is it just a prudent thing to do to a 25 year old chimney? In my case can a new thimble be inserted and secured appropriately? Are there any efficiency gains?

    Thanks

    Stephen C.
