old radiators clang

Old house owner

I have hot water heat, with a gas furnace. 50 year old cast iron radiators bang very loudly when the hot water starts circulating. They also clang when they cool down. Sometimes the whole house vibrates from the noise. Like a hammer hittng a gong! I bled the radiators of air, but very little air comes out of the fittings. Am I supposed to be bleeding them somewhere else? Any thoughts about what's causing the noise, and how to stop the noise? (other than buying a new house!)
