It's all starting to add up........

We won't install a stainless steel hot water maker in Stamford CT due to the chlorides, and I think that IS from the municipal water. I never thought about steam. I'll have to pass this along to the sales and service guys.

    Indirect and Steam boiler failures

After reading a bunch of the post's here on the Wall lately regarding " Chlorides ", something this are starting to add up. In my area, Hudson Valley NY, it is very well known that you can't use stainless steel indirects because of the chlorides in the ground water, eats them up in as few as 2yrs sometimes. Seems we are replacing more and more " newer " style steam boilers, irregardless of the manufacturer. We always assumed they were make-up water problems due to they were always failing above the water line, the more I thought about, the more I realized that the majority of the failures above the water line were right in the heart of the area where the stainless steel indirects didn't last either.

I think there is a lot more to this than anyone realizes!! I think Burnham might really be on to something with that new MST boiler.

    They are

There's no better oil-fired residential steamer than the MegaSteam. I've already said many times that we need a gas version of this boiler, so I won't say it again..... oops, I think I just did..... ;-)

    From NYC

You may be right, but I had a Burnham steamer go in 9 years with a crack above the water line, but the indirect sitting next to it is fine.

NYC water is pretty good. I have lots of stainless steel indirects over 15 years old with no leakers.
I only install Jazz or Viessmann, so I do expect long results.

I don't think chlorine was the culprit here.

    Not talking municipal Systems

I'm not talking about municipal systems where the water is treated, I'm talking about ground chlorides in well water. The steam boiler failures I usually run into within a municipal water system are always either LWCO failures or Oxygen Corrosion failures caused by a hack who just went in and changed the " Boiler Only " and slapped a auto feeder on it. I used to knock the boiler manufacturer but I'm getting the feeling I may have to eat crow.
