Megasteam
Steamhead (in transit)

for more info, here's the link to Burnham's MegaSteam page:
http://www.burnham.com/mega.htm
The only thing that's kept us from doing a MegaSteam is that every steam boiler we've done recently has been gas. Burnham doesn't (yet?) offer a gas gun for this boiler, I understand they've had trouble finding one that works well enough. I know they know they'd sell more MegaSteams if there were a gas version.....

Question about Burnham Megasteam
Glenn Stanton said about corrosion caused by chlorides
"The heat to trigger this reaction in the steam dome is removed by having the three pass flue design completely below the water."
Can you explain this or give me a link to info on this. Sounds pretty good. Also Steamhead just rants and raves about the Megasteam as being the best steamer hands down.
I will need a new steamer and I am heavily leaning toward oil steam and Burnham Megasteam although i have yet to start the process of getting quotes (know any good installers of steam in central Jersey). My question although a sensitive subject is about the casting issues. How is the Mega different and what can get me past my concern of this happening? Assuming that it is properly installed?0 -
In a vertical-flue or \"pin-type\" boiler
the top part of the section has no water in it, yet still has hot flue gases on the other side of the cast-iron. This top of the section is what usually fails, either by cracking or corrosion.
The MegaSteam's take on the basic 3-pass design places all the cast-iron that has hot flue gases on one side, under the waterline. The water opposite the hot flue gases carries off more heat and eliminates unequal expansion, and the cast-iron runs cool enough that it shouldn't corrode.
This design also increases its efficiency. For these reasons, the MegaSteam is king.

Info
I'm just starting to have my eyes opened to what you are saying. Have you installed them? I supposed this is a stupid question but is there a tankless coil version available even though it's a three pass? Many of those steam installs are the little old couple who has barely any domestic load and not cost effective to put in an indirect.0 -
Burnham Info
Thanks for the info, I'll have to download the install manual and read up on it. Carlin makes a nice little gas that we use once in a while for a conversion, seems like it would be fairly easy to make it work, although AGA and UL approvals I imagine throw a wrench in the works for a manufacturer offering a package. Thanks again for your input.0 -
Installers.
Why as a mater of fact I do. I am in Mercer County. I would love to give you a quote.0
