burnhams and lime

our area, va, is full of limestone, and consequently is a good portion of the chems in our water. even ss coffee maker reservoirs have to be routinely lime awayed or the scale becomes part of the walls, and can't be chiseled off. seriously, it's more cost effective to replace the reservoirs of neglected makers than it is to try to clean them

and while i can't imagine the cast iron in burnhams is different than other ci boilers, most of the boilers that we service are burnhams, is there a solution to keeping the scale from building up in our boilers? softeners and shot-tank chem treatment doesn't seem to be completely effective

    Distilled

If its a closed system, it takes very little water. Why not do the initial fill with Distilled water instead of tap water. You could keep a small tank, say an expansion tank filled with water to 25PSI or so behind the feed valve. Voila, no hard water in your boiler. A tiny bit of maintenance once a year perhaps.
  • well i'll be!

how perfectly simple, and right there all the time

    thank you

    pure boiler water

would a reverse osmosis filter do the trick for this type of water situation? i see you can get a RO for under the sink for about $175.00 that would probably supply a non leaking system its makeup water needs for a couple of years.
the first fill might be slow however--nbc
