oil vs propane direct heat vs regular set-up

For direct vent I'd go with propane, for chimney vent(prefered) I'd go with oil. for the same reasons you alredy mentioned. DV oil seems way too fussy, and can smell and stain the siding.

    oil vs propane direct vent

This is a very general question. I am trying to weigh pros and cons of oil vs propane direct vent boilers for an all new forced hot water system that we plan to live with for at least 20 yrs. Combo of radiators and a couple of rooms worth of under-floor hydronic radiant. (Gas is not available.)

Because we already own an oil tank and because propane is more expensive per BTU, I'm inclined to go with oil-fired. But the contractor really likes propane, advocates for its higher efficiency and cleaner exhaust.

I am also not against putting in a chimney and having a regular roof-vented boiler, if that's a better set-up.

When you don't know anything about it, it's really hard to know what's best, even at such a basic level. I'm usually able to gather enough info about things in books and online that I can at least get a sense of what the pros and cons are. Not on this one! Anyone care to weigh in on this?
