You have a leak at the burner assuming you have a gravity feed from the oil tank. It should be easy to find. Look for the oil leak. Since the burner mounts high on the furnace. When the oil drops oil below the leak it starts to suck in air and when the level is higher then the leak it will leak oil. Just look for the oil leak.
Jim, if a check valve was used it would only add more restriction to the oil flow . If you add restriction more air will be sucked in. Check valves are useless to correct air leaks they are only good to control flow direction which is not needed on just about all oil supply systems. Hope this helps.......

2 choices
add a return line or as a lot others will add a tigewr loop it can be added then u only filter the oil u use or # 3 keep the tank over 1/4 fuu good luck royboy0 -
Install a check valve near the tank, and check that the packing nut on the valve at the tank in snug.

lost prime
An air leak in the oil line at the burner or above is causing the loss of prime. Fittings (should be flared), fuel unit seal at shaft and plugs in the fuel unit not doped are the usual suspects. Check valves, tigerloops and 2-pipe sytems only mask the problem. It has to be properly repaired to prevent oil stream foaming which can result in incomplete combustion. The integrity of the line can be checked with a vacuum guage. Oil line leals below the burner will show oil spots.0 -
Don't
Don't let it get below a quarter tank and you won't have to blead it0 -
What Kind
What kind of burner is it, a Riello?
