It appears to be a buffer tank to add volume to the system.

  • Was at this,

small apt. bldg. the other day for a plumbing prob,, so while there I took a look in the boiler room. A.O. Smith,,, check,,but I can`t figure out what that large horiz. tank is,,it`s not the exp-tank as it is in the other pic at the ceiling. This tank measures 12"X 60",, the boiler flow enters 1 end,,the system leaves the other, tank not insulated. The manufacture date on the boiler is 1988, and the circ is continuous.
Is this some kind of pre-curser to a buffer tank??

(Edit)- I was thinking,,seeing as the boiler is CF(low water content), and the rads are fin-tube, could this tank act as as a volume holder type thing, so the radiation is not warmed in spurts??
