Replacement of standing pilot with atuo ingntor

I have a 1970 Kewwanee steam system my building has good valves and radiation. I even have Kew. manual but to save gas I would like to get rid of the standing pilot and install a automatic ignitor system. They show it in the manual but Kew. has been gone for a while. Are there off the shelf items can be used to save my up in smoke $. I'm in chicago but would like some advice. Also I have had the boiler retubed which you can do with the steeel biolers and when my heating guy did the calclation he said it was runing at about 72% eff.at the last check up. It is also for a six unit building I am guessing it is a 500000 BTU boiler.

    save?

The Question is ,how much longer do you think this boiler is going to last,I don't know. was it taken good care of? Maybe it's not worth investing the Installation cost Vs.saving Approx 2% off of you Fuel bill? Do the Math.
  • Yes there are kits

available to convert it over. Honeywell has the Y8610U for example. The draw back is the age of your equipment and the cost for the kit plus labor to install. The kit may run anywhere from $350 to $400 the labor to do the changeover another $300 to $400 depending on who you get.

The average pilot uses about $150 to $175 per year. So your return on your investment is about 4 to 5 years.

Give the orifice size on your pilot and we can figure exactly what it is costing you per year.

did a standing pilot kill my boiler??

i think the standing pilot [on year round] rusted out my old american standard steam boiler earlier than normal [27 yrs] with the condensation plus sulfuric acid collecting on the top of the section above the pilot and eating that upper part through the cast iron.
at least your boiler could be retubed if it suffers the same fate.
so you might save more than the pilot gas if you switched to electronic ignition--

    One question on boiler

Just wondering, is this a forced draft burner or atmospheric burner. You could not use the Honeywell kit on a forced draft burner, would not work. Also regarding the pilot causing corrosion. I would not worry about this.
