Main Vents

I have a number of questions but will start with one: I know that the recommendation is that main vents be at least as high as up on a 6" nipple. Is this only to prevent possible condensation (water slug) damage or is there also a difference in venting capacity/efficiency between this ideal position and a Gorton 2 at a maximum 1" height (connector) above the main? For instance, might a Gorton 2 installed almost directly into the main (max. 1" above) be more likely to close prematurely due to e.g. wet steam?

By the way, I'm referring to vents (one each main) that are correctly located essentially 15" back from point where main/return becomes vertical.
