Is it a nutty idea to begin a new forum for contractors only where we can discuss pricing, labor issues, and the like? Password requirement, and even a fee unless you advertise in FAP.

    how about

a business license number, and/or FAP status. For instance, I just encountered a boiler scope of work I have not done in over two years. I would love to bat around pricing with people who I consider peers.

That was my first reaction, as well......

.....Dan. Way too much for you and the elves to have to police.

As an alternative, what about adding a feature to the site like some other message boards have, where you can send a PM, or "Private Message" to another poster. I think that Oil Tech Talk has this. If nothing else, emails can work, as well.

    How

would I check a business licence?

Everyone who posts on the Wall shows an e-mail address. You can access it by clicking Reply and scrolling up. Not all the e-mail addresses are real, but I imagine you'd just want to chat with people who post real addresses anyway.

    The software we use

    doesn't have that capability, John.

    certainly,

then that leaves FAP members. I don't advertise, but I would join.

    You'd be welcome,

but I can't guarantee that other advertisers would talk pricing. Keep in mind that many of these people compete, and they shouldn't be discussing pricing with each other.

    Quality of discussion

In addition to the logistical difficulties, I think it could hurt the discussion on the Wall to create an exclusive bulletin board. How many times has a non-contractor added valuable points to a discussion?

Also, many pricing and labor issues so specific that they cannot be discussed openly on the Wall probably are not relevant from one geographical area to the next anyway. I could see this causing more confusion than it might resolve. Email may be a better way to carry on these conversations. Just my 2¢.
