If you use a Pex product with an Oxygen diffusion barrier, a heat exchanger is not needed. I like the Honeywell mixing valves to temper the water. The are easy to install and adjust. Pump away from the mixing valve, and provide ball valves and a drain as necessary to purge the air out of your system

Adding Pex radient to old iron circulating hot water system
I have a 1942 pumped Crane boiler hot water system with a combination of radiators and baseboard pipe heat exchangers all iron / steel. System is located in Atlanta, Ga. where residential boiler and hot water heating expertise is almost gone.
What is recommend if I wish to expand the system with a PEX based joist floor system. Can I tap the system directly and use oxygen barrier PEX or do I need to consider a heat exchanger? Tapping the system with out heat exchanger would be significatly easier. The current system operates at 180 F and 20 lbs.0
