New Jersey Licensing

Bob, while I served for eleven years as a state director for the NJ-PHCC, Union County association, my exclusive agenda was to form and promulgate a license for the HVAC side of that organization.

Looking back, the League of Master Plumbers as well as the PHCC never gave it any support whatsoever. Matter of fact, the PHCC claimed to support the bill, but the backroom politics prevailed, killing the sponsoring or any support at all, in fact, considred it a back door entry into a turf they had already lost - but were too caught up in their territorial turf wars to even consider the merits.

Rest assured, the fact that they somehow convinced some bright people that the archaic and rejected by 49 other states NSPC was "superior" to any other code, bodes poorly for this bill to ever get out of committee.

Corizine would be my last choice to sweep 50 years of Master Plumber trade domination and protectionism off the table.

An HVAC license in NJ?

Don't hold your breath laddie!

I've been told by some reliable sources that this will certainly pass, *maybe* not on the first reading, but soon.

    Comments?

Long time coming, and not soon enough! Maybe, this will get rid of some of the riff-raff, once and for all. But there work keeps me busy. But 3 years installing, and be grandfathered? Should be atleast 10. I've been in the field for over 20 years, and still seeing differant stuff.

    where do i fit

i have been in the bussiness for 24 years at least with 4 doing plumbing and heating befroe i switched over to heating and a/c which has been at least 20 ,in the past 10 years i have been doing all three ,working with licensed plumber doing there rough in ,and boiler work .The thing that really makes me crazy is most of the licensed plumbers don't really know much about heat except supply and return and some basic bull,i find it very hard to compete with there pricing why because there a lic plumber and me just a guy with a ref lic from 94 and alot of heating /cooling and mech background .So w3hat kinda boat am i in or out of ,Thanks for the heads up Robert ,peace and good luck clammy

I've only skimmed over the bill and I'm not sure how "far reaching". or how flexible (loop-holes) that there are, but I will let you know as soon as I'm aware.

I'm not sure If they let "clam digger's" in, or any "sand-people (Hydronic/Jersey-speak for: any person living south of the Raritan Bridge lol,,,couldn't resist that one).

I'm sure you will be fine though. By the way these bills never fully pass the way there written on first reading and are always modified.

Don't worry, this IS a step in the right direction.

    i believe your right Sir

I know that's it's a step in the right direction .I myself only do a/c when it's through a reccomemdation, becuse i can't complete with what gets called a/c around here but i don't let it getme down and as for heat i also only do word of mouth i am not the cheapest installation guy around but i always believe in what i do and i always stand behind my work and service it ,There are to many cut 2 pipes and slide one in and yank one out installation going on but it's that mentallality that all over the place it is very sad .It seems everybody set in there mind the cheapest install and workmanship like any one who works with there hands should only be permiited to live in a shed and survive on a minuim ,Maybe all this will kill the hacks while helping the independents ,Thanks robert peace and good luck clammy ps i'm way above raitain like 1 block from nys

This is fantastic in concept and without doubt a step in the right direction.

I agree with one of the other posts that there are too many 'licensed plumbers' out there who are more geared for supply, drain and fixture work who are doing heat work.
It is too often approached as tear one out, throw another in.

But in looking over the file you attached, I'm a little concerned about the requirement to obtain license. The draft states the requirements as:

    1) 21 years of age
    2) a US citizen
    3) employed for 5 years in HVAC
    4) 3 or more years of the 5 as a journeyman
    5) at least 2 years of the 5 in an apprentiship or other training program approved by the DOE

    OR

    a Bachelor's degree in HVAC

Do you think it should be more stringent? I do. All the things listed are OK and should be required. But if licensure will be heavily weighted on work experiance, than that puts a hightened level of responsibilty on the mentor employer. In other words, what if an apprentice works for a hack? The apprentice will learn the wrong way to do just about everything.

Being somewhat familiar with how many variables are involved with designing these types of systems, I would prefer to see an HVAC tech/installer/designer that has completed some sort of comprehensive education program, then a licensing test, plus the work experiance.
