Vaccum steam for apartment house
Steamhead (in transit)

I have a friend who inherited a bunch of Vapor systems that someone had put vacuum pumps on. They were always having trouble with steam distribution and failing vac pumps and traps, and the fuel consumption was outrageous. The systems' piping wasn't designed for vacuum.
Finally he tore out the vac pumps, went to gravity return, installed proper air venting and Vaporstats. No more problems. The Vapor systems now heat the buildings quickly, quietly and evenly on a few ounces pressure. The Dead Men are cheering from above.
A vacuum pump is not a "Band-Aid" for an ailing steam system. It must be a part of the overall system design. With that said, I know of a vacuum SYSTEM that was designed with retrofit in mind. It was the "Vari-Vac" system from Dunham, now a part of MEPCO, but this product line was recently sold to Skidmore and does not appear on their site. The Vari-Vac not only included a vac pump but also a control system that manipulated the pump to vary the steam temperature according to the outdoor temperature. This matched the steam to the load and was quite efficient when it worked properly.
You might try your Skidmore rep for further info.
