thanks for the heads up. I'll ask what the oil service company recomends or uses and put one in next week.

Last winter I replaced a 30 year old New Yorker steel boiler with a WM WTGO3. The tankless coil feeds/fed a Carlin Aquabank with bronze circulator. Everything was running OK but the boiler was getting a bit old so I swapped it while I'm still young enough and had the money. My primary concern is maintaining/protecting the boiler to insure the longest life cycle possible with no leaks or cracks. The boiler is on all summer - no cold start - with the low limit set at 140 deg. The tankless coil inlet is supplied from a solar storage tank, and I have isolated the aquabank from the system, so on sunny days the boiler fires only to maintain temperature while the solar heated water psaaes thru and then off to the fixtures. The piping is "pumping away", preasure differential is 4psi with a low of 14 on a one story house, the Ph is 8, the conductivity or TDS is 230 ppm. Last winter I observed the return temperature to drop to room temperature for the first minute or two so when a call for heat so I piped in a bypass loop after the circulator which opens when the circulator (Taco 007) comes on and then closes whe the return temp exceeds 130. The high limit is set at 200 deg. A honeywell outdoor air reset control cycles the bioler and circulator on a call for heat between the high and low limits on the triple duty aquastat. So far the solar and the 140 low limit give me ample hot water. I had the boiler digitally tuned/set up by my local oil company after instalation, and will have it done every year. So aside from keeping the boiler warm and not cold shocking it durring the heating season, are there any other things to do or look for? Thanks for any suggestions. Mark S.

  • Seems you didn't say if you have a low water cut off on the boiler or not .

Sounds like you covered all the bases. You mentioned being still young so not knowing your age make sure the solar system can be easily isolated if it fails. If it failed and your age hinders you from servicing it you can isolate and move on. Around here no one services solar anymore. Put some money aside for when the Carlin Aqua Bank fails. That Carlin company isn't the same one that is around today. Although those tanks last for many many years they don't last forever and all the ones still out there are old. Sounds like you listened to the advice for various controls and congratulations for keeping that WTGO warm it will stay much cleaner.
