cutting sight glass to length?

Grinding works great for eliminating the sharp edges and shortening the glass tube just a bit... :) ...or even for just cutting right through. Use the more friable but harder green silicon carbide wheel on the bench grinder rather than the pink or gray aluminum oxide, results are better. Don't breathe the dust - you get lots of it. Go outside in the wind.
It is much faster, but the glass is still breakable.

I am replacing the sight glass on my old boiler.
Need to know how to cut the new glass tube to correct length. New it is 24" long and I need to cut it to about 10" long. Thanks for all replies.0 -

i find the old fashioned way works best,
hold the glass under a cool stream of water at the laundry sink, and use a triangle file to file half way thru the circumferance, then snap it..

I'm with you Gerry
If I had a dime for every site glass I broke using "the tool".................
I once received a knock-down W-M steamer and found the site glass was broken. No biggie right? Just get another from the supplier. NOPE! They sent a delivery guy to the job with a 24" piece of tube. "NO BLEEPING WAY!!!"
I called my rep and told him to bring me the CORRECT size sight glass.

Just never could get it right.

There are several
tools that work well for cutting glasses. I prefer the chain cutter. Then again; we get lots of practice. About 500 a year. Can't stand a dirty glass.

I use
I use the one like Mike T showed for 7.95 Or one very similar, I always describe it as looking like a Z shaped tool. Since I have had it I screw up very few glasses. My question has always been why don't they sell the standard size glass.

gauge glass
I use a file. Quick & easy and I can't remember ever breaking one this way
Never had much luck with those fancy smancy thingys.

I scribe it with a three corner file, then heat it with a torch. When it cools, it snaps right off by just tapping it on the workbench.
