Blower bearing? Blade of grass or something in vent?

or screamer
Anybody have a screaming Ultra 80 NG ?
I've checked all gaskets, intake muffler, blower ****'y, burner, HX.
Doesn't matter what blower speed is once it starts.
Seems to start about 130F and stops around 145F. Cover on or off, and 100 yards away from the vent.
Wondering if it might be something harmonic with the casting ?

Is there glycol in the system?
If the glycol is too rich a mixture, there is a surface boil-off condition whereby the water in solution but in contact with the heat exchanger opposite the flame-side, will have a film of fluid that will come to a boil. Moaning and wailing often result.
Just a thought.0 -
Not a drop
I know what you mean, I've been doing low mass tube type boilers for close to 15 years. This noise is like nothing I've encountered before.

Corrugated flex gas connectors...
will set up a harmonic hum that can drive some people with sensitive ears CrAzY..

Just out of curiosity have you taken a combustion sample and compared with factory specs? How is the flow across the heat exchanger? Is the jacket sealed tightly? Is the combustion air sealed properly? Is the exhaust sealed properly? Can you hear the noise more outside or inside? Is the burner sealed tightly inside the heat exchanger? Is the burner in good condition? Is there a slight positive in the exhaust pipe? Answer these questions and I bet I can give you an answer.

we had one
we had one once. Hot water boiler awful squeal when the heat was on. A guy I worked with , Jay, went back a few times. He opened the flow check manually and it went away. Tried cleaning it, didn't work. Finally I helped him change it and the noise went away.
Probally has nothing to do with your situation. But it was loud and who woulda thunk it?0 -
I turn off
I turn off my hearing aid and asked "what noise? This is the most quiet unit I've encountered!"0 -
well....
I changed the blower, no change in noise.
It's not a flex line because we don't use them. It's also not a sensitivity issue, the mailman thought there was an alarm going off from 100 yds away in his car.
Cabinet doesn't make a difference, all gaskets are tight.
The only thing listed that I haven't done is the comb analysis.
Luckily, this is a very patient and understanding customer. Unluckily, he lives an hour away

wondering
Wondering if you cut the exhaust pvc and runs it in a short time ( watch out for the co2 level!) to see if it whistle... Its may be the pvc pipings onfigration making it whistles... What's the WM rep says?0 -
gaskets
and blower motor. The rep hasn't seen it in person.
The factory "hadn't heard of this problem". I was hoping someone had dealt with this noise before.

Take it from me. Until 8 months ago I worked for a Weil-Mclain rep as a service tech. Do everything on my list and you WILL find the problem.

Hey Josh....
Had a thought today with regards to gas piping. We don't use flex lines, but this boiler had a really crooked gas connection due to an improperly aligned weld. We ended up with a sort of double dog leg to bring it plumb. Is there a chance it could be too restrictive ? Only thing is, it does it way down at 30% fire also.
The common denominator is the supply temp range of 130-145.

I had an 80 LP
do the same thing. With the factory on the phone I adjusted the gas valve to make it go away. Yes it did combust analyze a bit out of the accepted range. The lesser of two evils I suppose.

was it constant
when it was firing ? Or kind of intermittent ?

squeeling Weil Mclain
It kind of sounds like you are flashing as the temp comes up due to lack of water flow. We have had noise issues with other boilers due to this. Just a thought, Tim.0 -
Tony I am 71.3% sure that you have a combustion problem. You need to get an analyzer on it. I am pretty sure Hot Rod is right on.
Josh
P.S. Don't do anything you aren't comfortable with!

Mine was off and on
but once it started you would have to shut it down and start over to get it quiet. It did seem more prevelant at blow blower speeds, regardless of reving up, or reving down.

Edit: How did you come up with 71.3% ?
