I have afriend that's having a new steam boiler installed with copper pipe using this new procedure called pro-press (no soldering), it crimps all connections. Has anyone heard of it and will it work on steam ???? There's also another product called copper lock that's supposed to work on steam also, with copper pipe.
Thank's DJ

There is a place for everything....

This does not seem like one of those applications.

With the cost of copper especially (not that iron pipe is cheap mind you) why not stick with what is proven?

Special considerations aside and with what I have learned on this site (not that I was a copper with steam fan) has me wondering, "why?".

    I've wondered about this.

Obviously we all have opinions but does anyone have a definitive answer? Are press fittings workable in a residental steam application?
I'd LOVE to stop dragging my Ridgid 300 to every steam boiler replacement job. Personally, I wish Victaulic would make a steam-rated gasket so I could drill my tees into a 4" header.

    propress on steam system

the makers of propress say that if you use the hi temp o rings then its ok my only experience has been to look at a steam boiler that used propress on the header and return piping and noting the o rings were leaking after 1 season of use personall i would rather do a steam boiler in black iron it just looks better as brad says my 00.02 cents

With out getting tech-nickle, the copper will expand and contract, and in time the joints will suffer. A steam boiler job requires steam fittings, and black pipe. What are you guys trying to do, ruin the trade? Make it easier? The trades have taken enough of a hit what with the approval of PVC, etc., and the "You can do it, we can help." stores, not to mention the moon lighters, etc. etc. etc. But what do I know? I'm just a plumber.
