Kind of like a guy who plays russian roulette for a living, it's not a matter of "if" but "when". It is a shame, his passion for what he did was phenominal.

Struck in the chest by a stingray. Its barb actually penetrated his heart--really bad luck...0 -
Man that sucks
He was so passionate about what he did you couldn`t help but watch him.
R I P Steve0 -
on my list
Steve was on my list of people I'd truly love to spend a day with. Many hours spent watching him with our sons.

Crikey...
Despite not owning a television, I always thought that Steve Irwin was one compelling man. Bad luck indeed but I guess it was a quick way to go- and a matter of time.
He was the true heir to Marlin Perkins but unlike Marlin, Steve Irwin did his own stunt work, not relying on "Jim" out there up to his knees in crocodile poop.0 -
Passion. That's what he had. And lots of energy. What a good ol' bloke.
Dave in DenverThere was an error rendering this rich post.

IT was only a matter of time....................................
Two phrases come to mind: No guts... no glory!; Live by the sword...die by the sword. He didn't live on the edge...he lived OVER the edge. There never was or will be another like him. My family was very upset, but knew he died LIVING the life he chose to...and we smiled about that. Stev Irwin WAS THE MAN. God Bless you you crazy F&^(*(*&(*U()* Aussie. I bet he played a bit o' rugby in his day too....just a good feeling. Mad Dog

I was surprised
he lived as long as he did. I mean, how long can you go around saying " blimey, this thing could kill me in an instant, so, I'm gonna get real close".
Definately a cool dude that would probably wear you out if you hung around him, but let's face it, he took a lot of chances that bought his life expectancy way down.
I feel sad for his wife and family. He was one of a kind.
Whenever you are real close to the wild you take and accept that risk, Zigfried & Roy, The Grizzly Man, Steve, and others accepted it.
We all have to go sometime, maybe we'll be as lucky and go while we're having fun doing whatever we love most.0 -
Don't get me wrong... I liked the guy, admired his passion, and feel badly for his family, but as a fan of the "Far Side" cartoons, I bet the headlines in the "critter" world are a bit less sorrowful.

GooDay.....;-)
When I heard the first few sentences on the news cast, I thought for sure that a crock finally got him. What a Man/Teacher of children and adults. and most of all a lover of VERY dangerous animals. If you think about it a little he is like a Dan Holohan X 10 with a steam boiler that bites back when you get too close..... No dis intended. Besides,... Dan is much more tenacious than any boiler around...;-). (I have seen the pic's on the wild horse at the park).,.,., This is such a great loss for man kind as you all know, and that in these time's we now live in are full of very few good people and for that I respect him in the highest regards....
As posted before I to think the insensitive jokes will follow. Beware J. Leno and Letterman this is a very touchy subject that warrants no bad taste antics......."Mark my words".
My .02 for what it's worth.

Blimey!
Unreal used to watch him with my son. What are the odds of being killed by a Stingray? . Like the scripture says , "Time and unforseen occurence befall us all."

RIP, Steve-o...
What a loss to the naturalist world. Steve was a guy who made everything interesting & understandable, an excellent teacher, a "showman of science", not unlike the late Carl Sagan. Wrestling crocs and tossing cobras around was his business, and he did it well. He was a one of a kind, and will be missed greatly. Sail on, Steve-o...0 -

Steam boilers do bite if you get them mad, Imagine if Steve was in HVACR

BOOM! BANG!

Then t-stat calls for heat and WACK, WACK WACK WACK WACK,....WACKKKKKKKKKKKKK. KRIKEY THAT WAS CLOSE. I don't know if you guy's have seen the episode where the crock comes out of the water and grabs Steve's lawn mower while it's still running and takes it back into the water.......WOW. "HE'S JUST A-LITTLE CRANKY TODAY. I DONT THINK HE WANT'S ME TO MOWE THE LAWN TODAY.

those're funny... I bet the ol bloke would get a kick outta that stuff.0 -
I always though he was too far out there but...
This is a guy who really did what he wanted. If he was afraid of anything you'd never know it.
What was so great was that he took people to places to get up close and personal to nature that they can never experiance. He got city kids off of cartoons at least for a while and took them places they may never see otherwise to teach them about wild things that deserve respect.
Critters and people owe a bit of gratitude to him.
g'day mate.0 -
yeah
If he had bin just a bit careful, a few more inches of space between him and the wild, he'd still be in the shot, be he always had to get within striking distance and has had many many close calls, I try to tell my students
There are old motorcycle riders,
There are fast motorcycle riders,
but there are NO OLD FAST MOTORCYCLE RIDERS
and
If you keep playing with electricity,
YOU ARE GOING TO GET BIT
how badly bit will depend on how your luck is today0 -
His old man was a plumber first
