The steam shovel, the steam engine, what next? the steam roller, the steam iron, the steam boat, the steam hammer... all that was a long time ago.
In the fifties, they were thinking of the nuclear ship, nuclear plane, nuclear automobile... :) The nuclear toaster would explain why it comes out all burnt.

Appreciation
I have looked at a couple of old "Mike Mulligans" like that and really got an appreciation for those that ran them. The operator was literally surrounded by cables and moving machinery, while backed up to a cauldron of boiling water. Even in January in New England I would imagine it being hot, and the possibility of losing a limb (or worse) was huge.
And I complain when I can't get cell service......0
