Frank, if I could have you here to run the show I would!
I can't throw the huge $ at replacing the boiler right now... I know the steam system has to stay in place for now. (Historic home, etc.) I'm insulating the house since the walls are empty... I think that will help more than anything. Yes, new mains are in the plan as well as re-plumbing the Hartford Loop. Hey, it's a constant work in progress but this things been needing some TLC since the previous owner let it slide during a drawn out divorce so this is the approach for now

talked about this bad boy in my basement.
I hired Krutsch Mechanical out of Taylor MI for a "skin off" overhaul this month.
Some fun photos are attached. (fun isn't really the right word for me)
Any comments or hints are welcome.
    Thanks

They said it would be taking the exterior skin off, cleaning and resealing the boiler...all the operating controls will be replaced, installation of a new spark Ignition kit, new gas shutoff and an auto water feed installed.
Kinda like a frame off restoration in the car biz so to speak...
  • what?!

U paying money to reuse the engery sucking boiler while u could ve had a new installed and seeing the payback.... What about the ventings, etc... I've replaced those boilers with new smaller one and no loss of comfort but less gas usage...

    Well, that's better than nothing

maybe if they baffle the flueways you'll reduce the amount of laminar flow in them, and more heat will get to the water. I still would have replaced it, but if that's not in the budget this should improve the situation.

Did you upgrade your main vents?

As nice as this works for you....

For the price you probably paid, with a few dollars more...(yes now, but please think long term...)you probably would have gotten a far better return on your investment by replacing it.

I have worked on these boilers, and like Mr. Milne always says...the BTU'S are just WAVING at the block as they pass through it, and heading up the flue/chimney. They don't have the ability to transfer them to it because of the HUGE passageways.

Does the term ..."Chasing your tail" ring a bell? I hate to say it...but with the price of fuels going the way that they are, you should have spent the dough to go whole hog. It may have not been in the budget, but I bet you would have saved a pile more by spending it here , than on the countertops and fixtures. JMHO. Chris
