    A hot water system

shouldn't be taking on any fresh water. It's a closed system. It needs a low-water cutoff to guard against leaks.

and that's exactly what i keep telling the knuckleheads that i'm dealing with, but our boiler pro?, he's got? me by experience, has it in his head that leaving the supply water on is the way to go. which brought up the discussion
of metering the water to see if there's a leak. and pro feels more comfortable with a leak/flood damage vs a lwco that could fail, because the high limit could fail at the same time. grrrrrrrr!

12 psi and a steady leak is a TON of water in a short time. If the supply is off and there is a leak, there will be a drop in pressure that the LWCO will catch. Simple as that. The supply can be left on after a new install to makeup as air is expelled, but is typically not needed after a short while.
