EBV Zone Valves.

In response to this thread, and an e-mail correspondence I asked engineering to look into why there are some leaks at the pipe plug connections on the EBV. Engineering has evaluated and recommended actions that are currently being implemented to prevent the pipe plug from loosing when the valves are put into service. if you have one that leaks simply tighten it slightly using an allen wrench. Any newly released product should have significant improvement in consistency of tightness and hopefully any such leaks will be eliminated. Thanks for your comments which helped us to address this issue, and implement corrective actions.

Taco EBV Zone Valves (Leak)
I installed 4 of the Taco EBV Zone Valves about six weeks ago and one of them has developed a leak. The leak was from the little Bolt in the back that is sealed with teflon tape. I figured I would see if I could fix the leak by giving it a little twist. Well, to my surprise, that thing is loose! Almost loose enough to take off with your fingers. I checked the other three valves and same thing. They are all loose. Whats the deal? Vibration alone will back these things out. Can they be tightened?0 -
never seen that.
best to get the date and series let Taco know ...what a bummer that is going to be.
Chaz , i buy a lot of Taco parts and pieces not worrying much at all about the quality. i still have a couple cases of ESP valves. i did get a couple few EBV's recently, when did you get these zone valves? maybe i should hot foot it back to check on some headders...0 -
Not Obvious
Its not that obvious I guess. The leak is a very slow drip that dries up. I noticed the calcification first about three days ago. Today there was a new drip mark on the top of the boiler under the same valve and when it shuts off, a tiny drip shows up. I put an allen key in the back and gave it a quarter turn twist with very little effort. It got me thinking that perhaps if I tighten it all the way down it will make the valve inoperable or something. I will fire off an email to Taco.0 -
Drip
I had same thing once. I ran the plug tight no problem.
good Luck0 -
How about the NOISE ??
I have four of them and can hear them open and close all night long. I am Really supprised how loud these are ??
Anyone else have this issue ?
Whhirrpp ( open ) Whhirripp ( close ).

Noise
Yes, they make a fair amount of noise and induce it into the pipework. You can hear the valve for the basement through the pipes on the second floor. It freaked my cats out at first but they got used to it. I also like the whooshing noise they make so you know they are closing rather than opening.0 -
Ok,
I was thinking that that screw was more than just a plug. I thought the pin for the ball might be under pressure if I tightened it down to much. It looks like it is just a plug.0 -
Weezbo.
I got these late last year, the Mfg Date was 10/07. They are the new ones without the NO / NC slide switch. All 4 of the plugs are loose to the point where they could be spun in at least another full turn I would guess. Hard to describe but the weight of the allen key was enough to spin it clockwise a half a turn. Im asuming you tighten these clockwise :-)0 -
Chas
I also here it in my second floor but don't like it. I don't want a noise to tell me its working. I'm not very happy about this and am not sure I will spec. these for our jobs.

Cahz, i am on the run right now *~/:)
one word to the wise is basically all it takes.
Soon as i finish this post i am off to replace a taco RMB control that i installed this summer, it quit just about Thanks giving. The lady did not call me at the time as she was dealing with the family and also knew that i had finally a chance to get to Anchorage to see my dad who was laid up in the Hospital on Elmendorf Air force base.
the RMB display ,when tested doesn't show the ramp or system pump and burner the first time, instead ONE HEARS THE "CLICK' OF SOME CAPACITOR OR PINNER RELAY, then ....nothing. so , being a fair man i try again..same thing, so i turn the power off check it 4 times in a row, holding my finger on the up button...finally ! it ramps the display shows the symbols...alls good right? WRONG. it still doesn't work, so now i go thru about 2 hours of ,if this then that ..to try to determine what is with this control display .
this is a first for me ..i have installed probably more of these than anyone in my neck of the woods...i think that i am always given the opportunity to solve for these things as i usually will share minor technicalities with other contractors, technicians and friends so that they have a clue as to what is what with things...
if it is turned on to manual overdrive everything works...the display is just a display however, why the intermittent functionality ?i have no idea other than the injection circ works with it on manual. the circ must have some gate within the electronic plate in its head *~/:) controlling it that makes a decision that if this is not happening then that wont be happening...
ok so its 14 below outside and that is no big deal,..buh when it was 43 below a minor technicality like this is a frustrating deal. lucky for me i do not have to go to the distributors and wait till a new control can be ordered.
honestly it is the first time i have even had ANY problem with the RMB. like i say , it is probably some micro farad component that is the culprit:)0 -
Tightened.
Ok, I tightened them up. It only took about 80% of a full turn to snug them in. There is a lot of tape and I suppose it was simply due to heating during installation.0 -
The EBV offers many positive features over traditional zone valves such as lower pressure drop and faster actuation as a direct result of the mechanical gear driven assembly. However, as with all mechanical devices, noise is generated during actuation as the gears turn, we cannot control that. The resulting noise is minimized to 7sec-10sec that it takes for the valve to actuate. It is further limited by the frequency of each zone that calls for heat, which may only be approximately 4 times per hour. Additioanlly, all product designs whether they be for cars or HVAC products are defined by tradeoffs. Unfortunately, we have to deal with tradeoffs to gain specific features and benefits. Taco is always listening to our customers and getting feedback on how we can continually improve our products. We use your feedback in our continuous design improvement programs which includes reviewing product attributes and tradeoffs made during the original design process.
