Thermolec boilers - ASME \"H\" stamp?

The "old" Monitron is both UL listed & ASME rated. According to the literature anyway. Nice to see a manufacturer "step up" & make an effort to quiet down their product. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one think that the boilers were kind of "clunky" while cycling on & off.

Hot Rod, Are Thermolec boilers -ASME stamped?

    Hot Rod,
Are these boilers "stamped"? I couldn't find anything in the their literature. TIA

    No

They are not ASME rated, and at present they are not UL listed either.

I use quite a few on residential jobs, but anything in commercial applications must be ASME rated in our area.

    Thanks Paul

    Thanks Paul,

I wouldn't be able to use one here in MI. Boilers need to have ASME stamping. I'm not sure that I would want to use one if it isn't UL listed at least. I'm sure that it is a fine product, just a preference. How are all of your Lochinvar boilers running BTW?

    Lochinvar

    They are all running superbly.

I did query the fine folks at Lochinvar about electric boilers for residential applications and they said they have not been pursuing it.

I don't know why the Thermolec isn't UL listed. My friend Kevin Pulver has been quoted as saying, "You can't buy a $10.00 toaster nowadays without being UL listed."

    Slant- Fin

Slant-fin's Monitron is UL & ASME listed, but I'll bet it's noisy. Looks like standard contactors with a sequencer. I haven't been around any electric hot water boilers, just electric steam boilers (Sussmann) & they are very noisy. You get the loud "clunk" when they turn on & off, due to the cycling.

The Burnham Carefree Electric boilers are UL and ASME approved and bear the H stamp. And yes the contactors do pull in rather loudly. They are also in stock and ready to ship.

    Carefree

    Hi Glen,
One of my suppliers, First Supply of Green Bay, WI, handles all three. Burnham Carefree, Slant-fin Monitron, and the Thermolec Boiler. Some folks may be able to tolerate the extra noise, but If I was looking at installing one in our camp in the not so distant future, I wouldn't be able to sleep (light sleeper) listening to the contactors turn on & off. If these types of boilers are going to be used more in the future, then the manufacturers should look into "silencing" these boilers a little better. Hot Rod said that the Thermolec's are pretty quiet, but without the proper stamping & UL listing I won't put one in.

Look at the Electro Industries brand also

They have the H stamp welded on to the HX. Nice control package with an optional zone or pump relay board. Nicely built, in Minnesota.

    electro boiler

I have used these boilers too on smaller heat load projects. Noise has never been an issue.

    NEW Slant/Fin Monitron

    To All:

Slant/Fin will be introducing a revised version of the Monitron Boiler. We have addressed the noise issue and the new boiler has a very faint click when the contactors pull in. With the cover on the boiler, this sound is barely noticable. The New Version will be shipping this summer.

    Bob

Is this an ASME model and is it UL listed?

I have not researched the older models, but what KW ratings will the new model be available in?

    Answer to Paul on Monitron

    Paul:

Yes, the boiler is both UL and ASME approved. It is much quieter. Yes, Ross I believe is correct, the older designs definitely had a "clunky" noise to them when cycling on and off. Probably the biggest negeative to the design.

If I can help anyone out with more info, give me a call at 516-484-2600.

    Thanks,

    electro boilers...

I can agree with Paul about the Electro Boilers, they are first class all the way. Very quiet and very well constructed. With the choice of electronics, the built in indoor/outdoor controller and the outlet temp control they fit any application residential or commercial. I use them all the time, good factory assistance. You shouldn't have to wake up each time your boiler stages on. Best Regards.
