Peerless steam boiler install ( Ron Jr. )

what you can get used to in short time . This house is typical for space alloted to heating equipment . The wall was there so they could finish off the basement . But just one more foot of space and we coulda worked like gentlemen , instead of bumping hineys all day .

Thank you Chris .

What a beautiful home . We were let in through the first floor . Thank God we didn't have to take this sootbomb through there . When a boiler gets this age , there ain't much you can do to keep it running clean all year . Except change 'er out .

Pretty tight room to work in though . And the lally columns were fun to work around .
  • Peerless ECT4

This was installed by Kenny , Phil and myself . Tom and Mike came by later to haul out the 5 sections that we put to the side .

We teed both boiler risers into a 3 inch boiler main . We also ran both system mains in separately . This way we know that any steam related problems are not from the near boiler piping .

We had to position the cleanout and coil side close to the chimney wall ( about 12 inches from the wall ) . It'll be tight to clean , but doable . We also threw a coil in , in case the homeowner decides to use it .

This was one grueling day . Phil is in his 60s and me and Kenny are approaching 40 . I'm not sure how many more jobs like this we have in us . I hope some co will invent a wall hung steamer before we're walking like the 3rd guy on the evolution chart .

    Ron....

Do your salesmen EVER give up?

Unless there was going to be more space provided....I would have told that homeowner to "pound sand".

You are a true inspiration to all us spoiled guys. I would have been collecting workmen's comp. 10 years ago doing things in your "allotted spaces".(of course..with the best crew..you got an inside line, and effort that they know about..daily)

    A true artisan....Chris

    Nice work as always Ron!

    I have a question though.
I was always under the impression that the horizontal runs from the initial riser need to have some length to them. I like the way you use street 90's and reducing 90's to make a tight dropped header. If that type of tight header gets the blessing from people here I'd like to start making mine a little tighter.

That space confines of that install make a tight header like that favorable, but even with all the space in the world a tight header would make the piping a lot more manageable.

Im not criticising, Im hoping to immitate if I can understand how a tight and expansive header differ in performance.

You do such amazing work Ron, the only shame is that I'm sure many of your customers cant appreciate the calibur of craftsmanship they are recieving. Its people like yourself, and others on the wall here that lead by example. And what a great example that is.

    Great job!

There was an error rendering this rich post.

  • Thanks Steamhead

  • Thank you Gerry

The Dead Men who installed the original steam boilers and systems were in a class by themselves . Imaging sizing , cutting , threading and fitting all that black steel and iron , most of it above your head ? I know I couldn't .
  • Norm

To pipe it tight like we do is not the optimal way . But we do other things to make it more of an even keel with longer pipe runs and space between tees . Like piping in the exta boiler tapping even if it's not specified , dropping the header to help separate water from steam , incresing the boiler main at least one size , and dropping the equalizer in a larger size than the return pipe . Personally , I have not heard of one near boiler piping related problem since I started piping our steamers this way , maybe 6 years ago . I'd say , go for it !

    Thanks so much Norm .

    Amazing!

Amazing job, Ron. It is unbelievable what your crew does in one day - again! I was hoping to catch up with you at Wetstock. Will you be at ASHRAE? -DF

    Ron, My Chin Hurts

from hitting the floor again... :)

I particularly like that you COULD have run the dropped header "outboard" of the boiler but you didn't.

Instead you rolled it inboard and coped the flue pipe around it, just to give the owner some more working/walking space on that side I am assuming. I think it would have been just fine to roll the header outboard and no one would really complain, yet you took the initiative and went that extra mile.

That tells me that besides being craftsmen, you and your crew are by nature considerate persons. Glad to have met you, Ron.

    As Always

Great work Bud!! Most work I see out there was done by the 1st guy on the evolution chart!! HAHAHA!!!!!!!! I will be down at ASHRAE. Are you going?? It would be nice to share a drink with you.
Since I hit the 40 mark last summer I now call 1 -800-got-junk to remove all the debris from a install. A couple hundred bucks gets everything from the old boiler to cardboard hauled out and away and the floor swept up. SWEET!!!! Keeps my back looking like #4 on the evolution chart!!

  • Thank you David

  • Brad , you got it

I was planning on having the header hang to the right of the boiler . Makes brushing the pins down a little easier . But that woulda taken up critical walking room . There was less than 2 feet between the wall and boiler .

We try to pipe our boilers like they'd be in our own homes ( although you'd be shocked at what my mess looks like :)

    Thanks a million Brad .
  • We have a great company

that removes the bigger boilers for us . But since we have to be there to disconnect the boiler from the system for them , it really don't pay to use them on the smaller one day jobs .

Wish I could go to ASHRAE and have a few cold ones with you , but I have a prior thing going on . Maybe another big ugly in the future ? Or better yet , a NYC Wetstock ?

Thank you very much Darin .
  • I'm planning

on someday travelling farther west than I have so far ........ the Poconos . Wetstock woulda been a great reason to break free . I'm going to miss ASHRAE also , unless I can rework a prior thing . i really would like to catch up with you , and Darin and Mark and Dan H , and everyone else . It's definitley been to long since Baltimore Wetstock , buddy .

    Thanks alot Dan .
