Munchkin Help!

Dof3 Member Posts: 120
I to had a swirl plate fall apart because of the intake sucking back the exhaust. I called Hot Water Products and they shipped 1 the next day. The tape on the swirl plate will work to get it going in an emergency. I have done that a couple of times. Make sure to raise your exhaust pipe so it will not happen again. Those plates are so easy to change it should almost be part of the yearly maintenance.

    munchkin help!

I have a 2 year old munchkin boiler. started getting fault signal f09 (no flame detected). had the boiler cleaned and serviced and the technician told me the swirl plate was melted. he had never seen such a thing before. he was able to get the boiler re-fired, and said they could have a new swirl plate by early next week. now the fault signal again. i can't get the boiler to re-fire. contractor says there's nothing he can do until early next week. is there any way i can get the boiler to re-fire?
  • Red Flag.

I have never seen a swirl plate melt. The boiler must have overheated. I have had a utility service man break a swirl plate, but never seen them melted.

It would have to get very hot in there to melt the plate. The F09 can be reset on the Munchkin control panel. I would be afraid to reset the unit unless a Technician is there.

    red flag

thanks for the input. everyone i've spoken to seems completely mystified by the swirl plate. my contractor also says he would like to replace my board so that he can change the post purge time from 30seconds to 120. he can't get the swirl plate and new board til 'early next week', so i'd still like to know if there's any way i can find these parts locally before then.

I would also look for recirc. of combustion gases.

Have you or the tech. called HTP?
  • What size?

I have seen the swirl plate corrosion. In some cases it was the concentric vent kit was loose and it allowed some exhaust to go back into the intake air. In some cases, it was the room had a bad negative pressure and the jacket isn't/wasn't sealed good and the negative room pressure would affect the purging of combustion byproduct (hence the longer post-purge on the new board). I suggested a weatherstripping gasket on the jacket (and screw in the two nuisance screws on the bottom to hold it tightly in place) to minimize outside interference to the sealed combustion.

The reason for this condition needs to figured out and dealt with (the longer post purge might not be enough).

    Hope this helps.

its a munchkin 199m and i'm in chicago. i spoke with htp and they are out of the part until next week. the technician who did the service yesterday did seal up the jacket with a cork tape to prevent any air getting him. i really appreciate all this input.

Munchkin and duct tape to the rescue

I installed my 1st and last munchkin about two years ago. The munchkin was installed in January and worked great. The second year I was called out for no heat and found the swirl plate gone. This was a 199 also and the part had to come from the factory. That night it was below zero and no one had a 199 in stock. You all want beleive this but I had nothing to lose I used small strips of metal tape and got this boiler up and running. The next day I had a 199 over-nighted just in case and two weeks later installed the new swirl plate. We have not had any more trouble with this boiler and no one has been able to tell me why this has happen.

that's funny. on the contractor's recommendation i just added strips of duct tape to the outside of the intake duct to try to achieve the correct air mixture and get the boiler to fire. i couldn't get it going. any other advise?

Joe not on the outside. The swirl plate. when the inducer fan comes on there is a saftey pressure switch that has to be made up for the gas valve to open. With the swirl plate gone or swirl vain the pressure change will not allow the gas valve to open.

What I did was to to trick the pressure switch into thinking there was a swirl plate. A note of caution if you don't know what the swirl plate looked like or how the burner flam should look don't try this on your own. This boiler is very picky with regards to proper combustion and I was just looking for a way to get this client through the night

    rodney,
don't worry, i'm not comfortable opening the whole thing up and trying to repeat what you did. the duct tape on the outside of the air intake was my contractor's idea for a way to 'get me through the night'. it didn't work though, and i'm not about to start messing around inside the munchkin on my own.
