Power venter

I represent Tjernlumd, (www.tjernlund.com) but they make an excellent unit, called the Enforcer, which will interlock with the burner so it operates only when there is a call for heat. As well, it will blend indoor and outdoor air to soften the affect of the very cold outside air.

I have a customer that has a power vented furnace. The combustion air is being pulled from the room. It's a new contructed garage/hang out pad. The customer is smelling exhaust in the building. I was going to install a combustion air intake kit on the furnace, but I'm not sure if this will take care of his problem. Also his return is cut out of the side of the furnace with a grill. Cound the return be too close and pull the combustion air away for the burner?

  • I had a similar situation where the furnace's fan was pulling the flue gases through the draft regulator which was always wide open when the power vent was on. The return plenum was open to the basement. The furnace fan will overcome the power vent fan.

    power vent

Typically an outside air burner intake will solve the problem you describe. As a rule of thumb you should install an outside air kit any time you install a power vent.

    Other problems

I agree that the flue gases are being drawn from the barometric by the furnace blower. Check to see if your furnace is approved to vent without a barometric. If you can eliminate the barometric you eliminate the main problem. A tjernlund SSII would work there. I would also ask the furnace manufacturer how they feel about running the furnace without RA ductwork. Your system static pressures are totally out of wack. They will most likely recommend adding ductwork. You may be able to get away with just restricting some of the air flow of the return side. None of the above eliminates the need to add combustion air.

    Hi All,
I'd like to supply outside air to my Burnham PVG-4 (power vent)boiler. Would have been cool if it had been designed for this from the get-go. What kinds of vents, both passive and powered, are available? Should I be concerned about frigid air blowing into the basement? I guess such a device could be configured to open/blow only when the exhaust fan kicks in. Thanks, Roland
  • Is this a gas or oil

system? If it is gas you can not take air for combustion and return air from the same room. The blower for the system will create a pressure difference in the room and cause poor combustion. Which in turn is drawn into the system and blown through the building. They must be isolated from one another.
