Circulator noise

I am at friends' with a baseboard hot water system. There is a loud vibration noise that seems to be coming from or near the circulators. There seems to be no change in heat or hot water. Is this something to be concerned about?

Thank you,
Tony

    I'd bet

the circulator (pump) has something stuck in the impeller. a ball of solder, copper chips, stones, any debris will throw the impeller of balance and start the vibration.

The circ is about the only spinning device in a hydronic system, unless you have a boiler with a fan assist and usually where the noise problem starts.

Ideally there would be isolation valves on either side of the circ. With them in the off position and the system shut and cooled down, loosen the 4 screws that hold the motor and impeller into the volute and relieve the pressure. Don't remove all the screws until you are sure the isolation valves are working and holding the system pressure. Then the assembly can be removed and the impeller and volute inspected.

Be sure the power is off to the boiler and pumps. they sometimes have separate power sources.

It's a simple and safely done job for a hydronic pro :)

Here is a circ with a copper chip lodged in the impeller wheel.
