Two pipe steam system

Cleaned boiler. After running the boiler. The boiler went into LWCO. I opened the relife valve and got a vacuum. The boilers water feeder turned on and added more water. The boiler ran from there on. The customer has a banging radiator. I think it's from the boiler over filling. There are no main air vents. I have seen main air vents on two pipe steam systems. Should I cut in a main air vent into the system. Thanks.

Joe, if that's a Vapor system
which I suspect it is, it might have venting devices that don't look like traditional main vents. See chapter 15 of "The Lost Art of Steam Heating" for some of these.
Very often these things have vacuum checks in them. These were great on coal but not on oil or gas. Sometimes they cause water to back up in the mains, which can cause banging.
If you're not sure what you're looking at, take some pics of the boiler area and some radiators and post them here. Where is the job located?
