recommendations for wall mount boiler

I am planning to purchase a wall mount boiler, do the rough in work myself, and hire a contractor to finish. I have a 1800sq. st. 2 story house with hydronic baseboard heat. I have a three zone system that I am converting from oil to gas. I have already put in a rinnai hot water heater so only needed for heat. We have figured 80000 btu minimum. I have looked at munchkin, embassy ambassador, and Vitodens. I am looking for a unit under 3000. I currently have three operating circulators that I might reuse. Any recommendation on a reliable boiler.

  • Look for support.

Have you looked at the Burnham Freedom CM, Knight, Trinity, Munchkin.

I like all of them. Find the company with the best support in your area.

I use a lot of Munchkins, great support in my area. Went to purchase a Burnham Freedom CM and my Burnham dealer did not want to be bothered bringing it in. The owner thinks the new modulating boilers are nothing but touble, he wants to stick to the cast iron boiler line. (WAKE UP!!!)

    Why not....

Get three quotes from professionals and ask to do the grunt work. This job may look simple but you are assuming a great deal of liability and perhaps performance problems.

Has the on demand been inspected???? Have you sized the gas piping properly? Venting properly? System demand properly?

A properly sized boiler does little good with old pumps that could fail. You need professional intervention in order to insure safety, comfort and efficiencies.

    new installation

    Hi,
Thanks for the replies. Yes I have sized the feed and have had the gas company come out and install a larger meter. I measured the run of my pipes through the house. I ran 1 1/4 inch gas line from the meter and had a contractor come out to do the final install on a Rannia tankless water heater which has been working great. I disconnected the oil heater and drained the system. I had the gas line pressure tested and had the gas company come out and inspect. Based on my measurement of a run of 148' of heating fins the contractor who installed my water heater suggested a 105,000 btu cast iron heater at 82% efficiency so I think I can go with a 90,000 or 95,000 at 92% efficiency since it is more efficient to run a slightly undersized unit then a slightly oversized one and my main source of heat is a wood stove. All the contractors around here want to install the standard cast iron systems. I plan to assemble all the parts needed, mount the unit to the wall and cut any holes needed through the outside wall and have a contractor do the hook-up. Thank you for your time in answering. The standard unit around here is weil-mclain but they seem overpriced and new to the technology. I am trying my best since I have little money.

    Prestige

You might take a look at the Triangle Tube Prestige Solo 110 and an indirect water heater. Why produce your hot water with a Rinnai when you will have a more efficient mod/con sitting there ready to do the work?

    hhmmm

Is this a really old house? drafty? window stuck open? 80,000 seems HUGE to me for 1800 sq.ft.

I have a 2250 sq.ft. 35 year old house all original everything (windows, doors insulation etc) and I am heating it right now with a 95% eff forced air furnace with an input of only 36,000 (34,200 output) located in SW Ontario Canada...

some thoughts on sizing...you have baseboard, not radiation, so I recommend you do an actual heatloss, and not how much baseboard you have.

    new boiler

I have installed munchkin, Weil McLain Ultra, Burnham Freedom & most recently Crown Bimini. All Mosulating Condensing boilers. As energy costs continue to climb, these boilers make more & more sense. the WM has the best features, but is a little bit pricey & hard to wire. That I can see, the Crown Bimini & Burnham Freedom are the same boiler with a different colored jacket.

The Bimini should be in your price range, and the are a pleasure to work on. Also they are very easy to wire and service. I have several of these running right now, and will continue to install them.

As with any of the low mass boilers- read and follow the manual, and use the pump specified for your application.

    Good Luck
