Why refer to the closing diriction of a valve? Why not just hot or cold to refer to valve stems? (This is what happens when you are raised on scorched air!)

Most domestic hot water valves / stems open counter clockwise and close clockwise. Domestic cold water valves / stems open counter clockwise when there is a round or cross handle; a lever ( or wing) handle should open clockwise..........0
