The Bridgeport to Port Jefferson IS a nice trip too...albeit a little too quick after the drive on 95, or reversed from the Island of Long..although the drive to Port Jeff. has some merit.
I lived out in Montauk (USCG) for almost 3 years, and used the ferry system all over the sound. There are no bad rides...just some that are shorter than others.(Shelter Island ferry.... going either way, for instance)
Devin, Have a nice and SAFE trip whichever way you go...(Throggs Neck nightmare is always a trying time...getting on the LIE. I wish I had a dollar for each minute spent making that transition!) Chris

Holiday Travel
Tomorrow , I am traveling down to see family for the Holiday on the Isle of Long.
All the way to exit 62 on the L.I. "expressway" I'm going down with my 4 year old, my two year old black lab, and the wife.
4 hours of pure joy. Should be loads of fun!!
For those traveling, be safe, and to all Have a very Merry Christmas!!

A less stressful way to travel to LI?
Hi Devan,
How about just taking the Bridgeport Ferry to Port Jefferson and then a quick trip south?
You'll break even on gas, be able to nap or read, etc.

In any case have a safe trip!

I go one step further and leave from New London. I don't have to deal with the nightmare around Bridgeport. Or has that perpetual quagmire finally been fixed...

At least....
It was named appropriately....the LIE!
I'm with Jim. Whenever I have to go to the Island of Long...I take the New London ferry. It's relaxing, and the drive through the North Fork is spectacular in the spring and fall.(added bonus...all the wineries!) Chris0 -
He's trying to save time
Chris,
We finally had the opportunity to use the New London Ferry and it worked out great because we were staying about 5 minutes from there. The drive was, as you pointed out, spectacular as it was early fall.
However, from where Devan lives in NY he's a straight shot to Bridgeport and it will put him right above where exit 62 is.
Now if they bring their own drinks and food to consume, they can really make out good, as the ferry food is questionable and beer is always too expensive on board!
