that is some fancy work. Gotta wonder if you end up filling the price gap fixing the work that was done. I have to say even being in the same profession as someone whi does that is agrivating. Having your name involved in even the loosest way would be hard to take. Reputation is all we have as contractors unless we want to blow tons on advertising and burn new customers every day but thats another line. Cant say I would know what to do in your shoes. Might want to have a real heart to heart talk with him though.

Again
This guy tells people he worked for me to give himself credibility. He might've learned what he knows here, but he obviously didn't learn what I know People tell me, "Well, he worked for you", and I say, "Yes, and I fired him."
Same mistakes in piping and no test equipment. It only takes a digital manometer to set one of these up I guess he thinks they're "factory set"
Of course, he did only charge them about what I would for the boiler swap to do all the bbd as well. Saved 'em at least 3G's
Scary part is no insurance and LP.....0 -
I am not a litigious person
but I am tempted to get an injunction which prohibits him from using your good reputation as a step-stool. It enhances his credibility going in and diminishes yours with every job he "finishes".
The flip side is, unfortunately, as employers one has to be very careful when giving an opinion of an employee you fired. There are enough lawsuits out there for character defamation, even if the person juggled lit torches during a gas leak. The burden falls to you sometimes to prove that first, by which time he tells a jury or magistrate that you are depriving him of his livelihood.
Maybe a frank talk to the effect, "Do not EVER say you worked for me, and I will gladly say the same thing, wish it were true."

hey tony
Bottom line ,the work you are showing is well below par so don't worry to much it will all come back and kick em where the sun don't shine ,at one time i had some friends who had used by name as reference ,the people brought it ,it's not my fault they got a crappy job as pt barium stated a sucker born every mimute ,and as his workmanship shows that he won't be around to long at least long enough to fix em when they break ,peace and good luck clammy0 -
Not sure if he reads the Wall......
..... but if he does, "You should be ashamed to take money for work like this."
Horrible.

At the very least, I would send him a registered letter
sternly warning him and that if it comes up again, you will seek legal action. He's a mutt. Mad dog

Brad
The reasons I fired him are documented I even have signed affidavits from customers stating his actions on their projects during his brief employment with me.
Word from the supply house that sells the Baxi here is he may get denied sales of anything beyond simple.

Beautiful....:/
The part people need to understand is that he workED for you. Past tense, and understandably so.
So how did you find out about this job? No heat? Weren't happy with the end product? Called you and said a former employee botched a job for them?
What a chump!0 -
registered letter
Sounds like good advice to me.
Send a registered letter stating the obvious, preferably on legal letterhead.
Protect your reputation, you worked hard to establish it.

For us non-pro's . . .
how about a basic explanation of what's wrong with that job, besides the tangled tubing & pipes? Some day I'll probably have some work done, and I'd like to know specifically what to look for.
thanx

no pro here...
But that electrical wiring isn't code!
I wouldn't take bets on the gas piping.

The call I got
I was called because it wouldn't heat the house, even with a pellet stove helping, and the DHW was so erratic that they couldn't get a shower.
The customer called Marathon (Baxi's N.A. rep), who gave them the store's #, who referred them to me. I don't know how they got Marathon's # because this guy didn't, and never does, leave the manual there. I don't know what he does with them because I know he never reads them
It took me 40 minutes to set up the burner with my digital manometer. It wouldn't modulate down to true low fire, it would only go to about 80%. The fire would bang-bang, on-off continuously on DHW. It would also do that on space heating because of the 1/2a$*ed attempt at P/S, which isn't necessary with this unit on such a small load. Notice the 1" ball valve between the tees to the boiler ? That was open about 1/3. There is NO system circ. The boiler circ has 5 GPM at 13 ft head available for system load. The house is all piped with 3/4 FostaPex (which looks like spaghetti in the basement), so the carrying capacity isn't more than 50k.
I didn't quote this job, it was all his via a friendship with their one son. The last one I quoted that he got, and I fixed, he was $ 5k under me. He got booted from that one before he was finished, and whined saying he didn't make any money because of not finishing He was 2 months on a 2500 sq ft house and they owed him $ 700 to finish and called it quits. Too many 50 degree nights, cold showers, 11 a.m. start times w/ 2 p.m. quit times, et al, ad infinitum. Couldn't get a pic of that one cause the customer got PO'd when he caught my helper and I giggling about pics. Next phone will have a camera
My reputation is intact. I didn't get the profit from the original install, and I didn't hose the people for my work, but they have already told people who screwed them and who made it work. I was just there Friday the 14th of December and have already heard feedback downtown0 -
Baxi-Luna \"C\"
That is lunacy for an install.
Criminal.

problems
Well a couple of things I see and dont understand. The gas piping - where is the drip tee, and what is the second soft copper line feeding ? Electrical wiring hanging all over the place - was this a completed job ? Relief valve isn't piped to the floor. I can't tell from the spaghetti of piping, but is this a one zone system ? How about that great thermostat wiring job. Is this a Luna with the relay card ? So do you have any after you repaired pictures, of what it should be like ?0 -

Bob
No after pics, they won't let me clean it up
The copper line goes to the dryer. This after 25-30 ft of 3/4" Gastite, which isn't large enough for full fire IIRC.
Yes, one loop/zone. She said, from her wheelchair, that one bbd never got warm. It does now after I closed the BV between the tees and took the handle w/me
This guy uses a loaner crimper for the FostaPex from one store, and told the supplier of the Baxi that they should have a loaner digital manometer0 -
wow
A mess from the OSB out he could of at least used plywood and painted it. I do not see a gas shut off valve or a union at the boiler? Dryer line in 3/8 CU ? Looks like a 3/4 x1/2 bushing in that 3/4 street 90*?. Are there no inspectors where this was installed ?0 -
Nope
No inspectors here. That's what makes it hard to get work when you're quoting against a mutt. Forget the level playing field, we're not even in the same stadium
There IS a gas cock and union at the boiler, it comes with it. That 1/2" OD copper to the dryer is also "strapped" with cable staples

Tony, Here is What I Would Do
You did not say f you are in a small town or a large urban or suburban area. If you are in a small town I would take out a half-page ad in the local newspaper stating that he worked for you for x amount of time and that you fired him because of x. You have to make absolutely sure that evry word is 100% true. He can't sue for libel or slander if it is all true.0
