I heard an ad for this system on the radio today. Does it work?

This is CoGen. In it's most simple form they use the fuel to run a generator, and the exhaust is used to heat the house. This type of system has been around for quite a while. Does it work? Sure. But that's all I know. Must be pretty expensive to put in and I'd imagine it would need more than average maintenance.

Anyone work on these types of units?

Yes it works, the engine is a Honda and will require minimal maintenance. The basic set up has been used in Japan for awhile and has been enginered to adapt to our systems. Very bright bunch of guys

Looks like a good system-produces 1200 watts of electrical power as well as providing heat from the exhaust. In simplistic terms, produces heating at 92% efficiency and matches output to heating loss, so it competes in efficiency with a mod-con. Looks like it would be cost effective only if electricity is above 15 cents/kwh-the higher the electrical cost the more cost effective. I have seen the package in person, but have not applied one yet. Honda certainly has the engineering expertise and quality control to produce a good piece of equipment.

I have been following this for several years and it seems like this concept is viable and they are cautiously introducing it.The last contact I had with them was an e-mail where they were targeting only a couple of New England states to begin with.

If all goes well they will expand their markets and production accordingly. We are in the Midwest and they have kept me posted about the way things are progressing. I will dig up my notes on this and see if there is anything to add.
