dancing flame in the middle of a KOI pond

I know that it must be nice to have disposable income to be able to do things like this. But I just can't stop thinking that maybe there is a better thing to do with your spare change, especially this time of year. And what about contributing to pollution. This type of light show must put off some sort of carbon type residual. Add to that the fact that energy prices are rising. I'm sure this will help keep prices down, not.

Down here on the gold coast of CT I see a lot of conspicuous consumption. All with no regard to the implications beyond their front door.

Dancing flame in the middle of a KOI pond

So I got a call from a freind who was asked by a landscaper about this. The homeowner is having a large KOI pond installed with his landscaping. He wants to be able to turn on a flame that will dance in the middle of the pond. A small flame but he wants little or no mechanicle to be seen from the edge, and the flame has to be self igniting. The pond is about 30 feet in diameter. I was Thinking of a black box ignitor and a pilot assembally with a thermocouple. All of that in a 6 inch pipe nipple that was just high enough to be above the water line. The thermocouple would open a main valve that would open to an orfice under water. I have played with this just lighting it manually a while ago and the flame looks great. If the transformer was on a switch at the house like a twist timer i think that would work. Sounds like fun anyway. I wonder if someone makes somthing for this he can't be the first guy to ask for it? An ideas

The gas system used for the volcano at the Mirage in Las Vegas would nice. Could have a fish roast and show at the same time...

Build a free standing island out of concrete in the middle of the pond, with the top surface at or near the standing level of the water. Then, add ice to that surface with necessary burners, and you have fire on ice in water.

Personally, if I were a Koi, I don't think I'd like to have the heat and hydro carbons mixed in to my environment... But that's just my take.

    Not the only one

I too believe that we come from a culture of over consumption. I shake my head when I read about some of the ways we as Americans over consume. I truly get more concerned as I get older. What examples are we setting and better yet how do we diplomatically point out wasteful practices?

It all hits home when you become a grandparent. I truly feel obligated to condemn wasteful practices. Things like snowmelt systems,15 head shower stalls aesthetic gas fireplaces etc.

Most over consume because they can! Hopefully that will change!

    Contribute more by consuming less!

Hand Grenade + Koi Pond = Sushi

The flame may not last long but they will not forget it.

    Hmmm.

Why not just float some gasoline on top of the water and ignite that?

    True display of gross consumption.
