that boiler had a tankless coil, which accounts for the excessive firing rate- it was sized as a water heater. The typical Baltimore rowhouse of that era probably has a heat loss of 60,000 BTUH or less, which illustrates how oversized that boiler really is.

We just cleaned a similar boiler out today, coil was abandoned long ago. They didn't want to replace it, so we did our best with the existing one. It already had a Beckett AF, so we rewired it so the burner only fired on call for heat, baffled the flueways, added a draft regulator (hard to believe no one else caught the lack of one) and valve-on delay, dropped it to 0.75 GPH with a nozzle that wouldn't impinge on the chamber, tuned it on the Testo and the house heated great.

I came across this operating relic today. I am not sure if this site supports the attached movie. That is 1.35 gph of pure hot fire. Yup, swilling that oil a round of shooters. I usually only see these babies cold, probably for years. Full of mud and asbestos. Boiler sizing for these row houses should take a clue from the fact that the house has been kept from freezing for years by the operation of a kitchen or basement stove. Amazing, most people live to tell about it.

    you are \"spot-on\" about the 60,000 btu's

The hot air furnaces I sell are the two stage type. I would bet that if the homeowner leaves the thermostat alone that the second stage comes on only once or twice a season.
Do you guys do hot air, and cooling? What are you using to damper down the flue passages?

  • Unless

it's a no-heat call, we refer forced-air and A/C jobs. Since everyone else in Baltimore works on tin, it makes no sense for us to do so.

We use bricks in flue passages, just like the Dead Men did. For an in-depth discussion of this, get a copy of the old Audel oil burner guide written by Frank Graham. If you've ever read Firedragon's books, you'll see Mr. Graham's influence there.

    You gonna replace that boiler?

I have the Audels book that you mention.

And I gave one away (came across another copy somewhere). If the customer gives us the go-ahead, yeah we will replace it.

Did you get to look at that steam job at the Episcopal School/Church up off of Monument St? Attached is the 6" soldered copper near-boiler piping.
  • I haven't been there

maybe Gordon did- have to ask him. I wouldn't want to be in that boiler room when one of those joints lets loose!

It is all riped out, and waiting for an LGB-15

    by others--

    Check out the Alternating receiver
  • So it's a large Webster Type R system

with a boiler-feed pump after the alternating receiver?

Talk about a kludge........ bet they were running it higher than 8 ounces pressure too. BGE must have loved them.

I would think that they will continue to love them.

The mechanical ripped out everything except the alt. receiver. New feed tank and main trap will "restore" the old operation.
