first- it dries the steam out better.
second- it serves to stifle the ''heated air rising'' effect of warm air above the waterline rising out of the boiler between cycles, which sounds great but will usually go only to certain radiators and overheat those areas.
Third- the risers now form ''true'' swing joints.
Forth- the header actually is easier to install this way.
The disadvantage tho is that there is a greater monetary investment. In short, if your willing to spend just a bit more dough, you can get some pretty good advantages.
