    Smoke Pencil

I'm looking to purchase a smoke pencil as an addition to my service tools. Anybody who could advise me on a particular brand they've had good luck with , I would appreciate it. Thanks for all you do - Ian

Thanks for that link- I think :)

Now when asked, "what do you want for Christmas?" I know at least where to start looking now.... just as I was going into recovery too...

    Cheers!

    Most safety equipment dealers..

will carry smoke pencils, the last one I had was made by Draeger out of Germany, it had a squeezebulb, and you broke the ends off a glass tube, put it into the squeezebulb, and smoke galore for about 10 minutes. There were 10 tubes in a refill kit. Great for IAQ sleuthing.

    Brad...

... best be careful what you wish for! I have an old glass smoke gun, came in a wooden box. Nice corrosive stuff in the gun as hinges on the box rusted off. Yup, I could blow smoke with the best of 'em! Pretty certain you should NOT take one on the plane when you travel. TSA folks might not be amused.

    Happy holidays ;~)

My most valuable tool! Carry a paper clip with it to unplug the spout of titanium dioxide. Forget about those single use tubes or Borizon powders.

If you put the Teflon puffer in a baby food jar or pill bottle, it rides fine on airplanes. Just put it in your checked luggage.

    I miss ...

I miss those days of lighting up a KOOL and using it to check for draft and leakage. AH, cough ,cough, the good old days.

    not all smoke created equally

The problem with using smoke from cigarettes or matches is convection. The smoke tends to rise while chemical smoke from TiCl4 is neutrally buoyant and will hang in front of your face until a stray air current moves it. Super sensitive. I use it to show homeowners duct leakage, combustion vent flow/ spillage, cold air infiltration, and air shunts within the envelope of the home such as with depressurized basements WRT upstairs. I use it to check for leaks around glass doors on direct vent fireplaces and demonstrate air flows into fireplaces and smoke spillage from eddies. Can't do those with thermal smoke.
