Water heater question

In my area, water authority is putting backflow preventers in at water meters, which makes an st12 tank mandatory. The water can no longer expand back thru water meter as older meters allowed.

Water heater question
I am replacing my current water heater.
Someone told me to install a st12 expansion tank.
I currently dont have one. Is this necessary?
Thank you all for your input.0 -
Sammy,
have you had any problems with the relief valve on your old heater "weeping" or spilling water on the floor?
The expansion tank is to absorb the expansion in the heated water when it doesn't have any place to go. It certainly doesn't hurt to install one just in case but not a necessity if things are ok with your current heater.
You may also want to check with your code authority to see if it is mandated by the current code.
