how to pipe inside wood boiler to existing boiler

is one of my favorites. I see a good match for products like the Caleffi HydroLink.

The main thing to avoid if flowing hot water through either boiler when it is un-fired. This just sends heat up the chimney, also know as a cooling tower.

P/S works great, some parallel piping can work. Three way zone valves are another way to keep flows working properly.

Controls can range from mild to wild. manual ball valves and on off switches, setpoint of differential controls.

More high tech would be tekmar of microprocessor based smart controls. Or PDL controls built specfic to your installation.

Many of the European control systems have alternative energy controls that blend solar, wood, and gas or oil fired appliances. They often use multi coiled indirect storage tanks to store the energy and keep all the systems happily working together.

Most wood boilers benefit greatly from some sort of buffer tank. this allows you to burn good, clean, hot, efficient fires and store some BTU's to get through nightime of off- burn days.

I'll be presenting some seminars on this topic for the Cipex show in Toronto, and also NAOHSM in CT early next year, if you have time stop by.

piping wood boiler to hydonic boiler

I will be contstructing a new home and was interested in installing a inside wood boiler to help maintain water tempertature in the main boiler i plan on installing. My maing goal is to heat the house on the coldest days with the hot water from the wood boiler circulating thru the primary boiler. I'm not quite sure how I would pipe this layout and what controls I would need.

    Perhaps you could...

prevail on both a boiler manufacturer and the stove maker to provide piping schematics that meet either's "standards."

You are not the first, nor will you be the last to conjur up dual fuel arrangements. If nothing comes up regarding your specific sititaion, look at drawings for multiple boiler installs and modify what wood can and can't do - and come up with a piping schematic - subject to the on/off limits of wood burners.

    Wood boiler

If I were you, I would select a wood gasification boiler (down draft). They have the best efficiencies. (Tarm, Eko, Econoburn, Wood Gun, etc..... to name a few.)

Most wood boiler owners have a heat storage tank. It is more efficient to burn an entire load of wood and store the energy in the storage tank for futur use.

Friendly advice: check with your insurer before using an indoor solid-fueled boiler. Insurers are getting truly wild with their requirements. When I changed homeowner's insurance a few years ago when the inspector saw my radiators he INSISTED on verifying that there was no wood or other solid fuel boiler. He told me his company would not write new policies for such--has to be outdoor. I'm in the heart of woodburning country...

    Low-loss header with wood boiler

For output up to 200,000 Btuh, a Low-Loss Header Plus from Precision Hydronic Products may be an option. This allows connection to the wood heat source on one side and the boiler on the other side. By controlling the pumps, you could have either the wood burner or boiler provide heated water to the low-loss header.
