Yes you can use that valve to let water out of the tank. Tank should have 2/3 filled with water rest filled with air.

The pressure guage reads above 20 psi
Since I turned on my boiler this year my boiler guage reads above 20 - 24 PSI. I have bled radiators and also purged water out to bring down the guage for that moment. The guage seems to always go back above 20PSI.
Could it be my Expansion tank ? I have a older American Standard setup. The Expansion tank stays Ice cold all the time. I have read this website which state that the tank should feel warm to the touch. Should I try to open the valve in my expansion tank to let air/water out ?0 -
The pressure when the system is cold is set by the pressure-reducing valve, and it can be adjusted with a screwdriver if this valve is working properly. If the pressure shoots up when the system is hot, that is a waterlogged tank. You should not mess with it if you don't know what you are doing.0 -
Water Logged Tank
There is a valve under my expansion tank. Can I open up this valve to let the water out of it.0 -
recharging expansion tank
First shut off the boiler. There should be a shut-off valve between the boiler and the tank. Shut off that valve then open the valve at the bottom of the tank. Drain down the tank completely. Close the drain valve and open the shut-off valve between the boiler and the tank. Make certain the water feeder is working to refill the boiler. Turn on the boiler.0 -
PRV
If after recharging the expansion tank the pressure shoots back up to 20 - 24 psi you need to either adjust your PRV or replace it.
